Former MLA Sabyasachi Dutta arrested after complaints of extortion and corruption

Sabyasachi Dutta, who served as a Trinamool Congress MLA from 2011 to 2021, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate after a formal complaint alleged that he forced a Salt Lake businessman to pay large sums of money. The complaint prompted an intensive interrogation that began the night before his detention.

The investigation uncovered a pattern of alleged wrongdoing that stretches back years, including accusations of forced levies, intimidation, and other corrupt practices in his home constituency. When the authorities examined Dutta’s financial records, they found multiple irregularities, leading to the freezing of five bank accounts and the seizure of ₹3.70 crore in cash and fixed deposits.

Dutta’s arrest marks a significant escalation in the probe, as prosecutors now have tangible evidence—such as gold, purchase receipts, and bank documents—to pursue charges of money laundering, extortion, and possession of disproportionate assets.
