Veteran playback singer S. Janaki, who died at 88, left behind a record of unparalleled breadth. Starting with a debut in the Tamil movie "Vidhiyin Velayattu" in 1957, she went on to sing in Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and roughly fifteen other regional tongues.
