Official data released on October 1 indicates that Rs 2,000 currency notes valued at Rs 5,884 crore remain in circulation. These notes continue to be legal tender despite the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) having withdrawn them from circulation on May 19, 2023. According to the RBI, the total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023, has decreased to Rs 5,884 crore as of September 30, 2025. This represents a return of 98.35 percent of the Rs 2000 banknotes that were in circulation on May 19, 2023.
