Roy Calls for Respect of Personal Laws Amid UCC Debate

Kolkata – In a candid interview on July 12, Trinamool Congress MP Saugat Roy urged lawmakers to respect the existing personal law systems while debating the Uniform Civil Code. He reminded the audience that each religion in India has long‑standing statutes governing marriage, divorce and inheritance, which deserve protection.

Citing the Muslim community’s adherence to Sharia and the Christian churches’ matrimonial codes, Roy argued that a blanket civil code would disregard centuries‑old practices. He added that the Hindu community already follows ancient legal texts such as Mitakshara and Dayabhaga, which handle family matters effectively.

Roy also addressed internal party dynamics, noting that Anubrata Manda’s decision to leave the party reflects a personal path after years of guidance from senior leaders. He dismissed the Solicitor General’s recent commentary on Hindu law, stating that the community will continue to operate according to its traditional framework.

When the conversation shifted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s New Zealand visit, Roy highlighted the strategic importance of staying connected with the sizable Indian diaspora residing there.
