Roadside Technicians to Get Certified in EV Maintenance under New Tamil Nadu Scheme

Chennai – Tamil Nadu’s Labour Department has unveiled a focused training initiative that will certify 22,500 roadside technicians in electric‑vehicle maintenance. Out of the total, 12,500 will be two‑wheel and four‑wheel mechanics who currently handle gasoline and diesel vehicles.

The programme is financed with a ₹3 crore allocation from the current fiscal year’s budget, as part of the revised 2026‑27 financial plan. The funds will be used to set up practical labs, provide safety equipment, and deliver instruction on EV battery packs, electric motors, power electronics and diagnostic systems.

Minister J. Mohammed Farwas explained that the scheme was crafted after extensive consultations with the traditional automotive workforce, who demanded structured training to stay relevant as EVs become mainstream. The training will emphasize high‑voltage safety, battery diagnostics, fault detection and the operation of modern EV service tools.

Authorities are evaluating proposals from professional training providers to design the syllabus, determine eligibility, and manage training centres across the state. Comprehensive guidelines covering course length, batch size and assessment criteria will be published ahead of the roll‑out.

The plan mirrors the ruling party’s election pledge to offer a ₹10,000 assistance package for mechanics who achieve EV‑service certification. By equipping existing technicians with new skills, the government aims to preserve jobs, support the state’s EV adoption curve and contribute to cleaner air by reducing dependence on petroleum fuels.
