Rituals at Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Feature Panchamrit Abhishek and Ash Aarti
The Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain hosted a unique set of rituals on Bhumvati Amavasya, blending traditional ash aarti with a vibrant Panchamrit abhishek. The ceremony began with priests reciting mantras while the sound of conches and bells resonated through the sanctum.
The deity, Baba Mahakal, was first anointed with a special ash derived from Kapila cow dung and medicinal herbs, a shift from the older practice of using cemetery ash. The ash was then combined with cannabis leaves, creating a striking visual effect that symbolised divine protection.
Subsequently, the priest performed a lavish Panchamrit abhishek, pouring milk, curd, ghee, sugar, and fruit juice over the idol. The mixture flowed over the ash-covered statue, intensifying the spiritual atmosphere.
A massive gathering of devotees, some arriving the night before, observed the rituals with devotion. The temple’s courtyard rang with the chant "Jai Shri Mahakal" and the rhythmic beats of drums. Security personnel were stationed throughout the complex to maintain order during the event.
