Rising Screen Time Linked to Growing Need for Eyewear, Experts Say
New Delhi, October 9 — Health professionals warn that the surge in screen exposure is directly feeding a spike in eyeglass demand. Dr. Praveen Vashishth, leading the community ophthalmology wing, highlighted that children now spend many hours glued to computers, laptops and smartphones, a stark contrast to past generations who played outdoors.
The WHO’s Reflective Error Situation Analysis Tool revealed that nearly one‑third of Delhi’s populace suffers from refractive errors, prompting a city‑wide strategic response. A task force comprising central and state officials, district program managers, the institute’s full ophthalmic staff, and NGO partners has been assembled to accelerate eye examinations and dispense affordable spectacles.
The programme’s roadmap aims to reach all individuals needing glasses by 2030. Continuous monitoring by a 70‑person team will assess gaps, refine interventions, and ensure that vision workers and community centres are equipped to serve the capital’s residents.
Historical data show that myopia among children increased from 7 % in 2001 to upwards of 20 % today, mirroring global patterns. Experts stress that reducing screen time and encouraging outdoor activities are essential to curb the escalating eyewear requirement.
