Residents Blame Safety Lapses as Noida Street Subsides Near Construction Site
A road in the Surfbad locality of Noida's Sector‑73 subsided on July 10, sparking outrage among nearby inhabitants. The incident happened beside an active commercial project where a large basement is being dug for a future D‑Mart outlet. Accumulated rainwater in the pit reportedly compromised the earth's bearing capacity, leading to the collapse.
The subsidence also caused structural damage to the I‑Thum building next door, cracking its outer wall and affecting adjacent properties. The area’s drainage system and an electrical transformer were caught in the ground movement, and a temporary wedding pavilion erected by the developer tilted, forcing officials to lock it down.
Locals accuse the developer of disregarding essential construction safeguards, such as proper shoring, drainage planning, and soil reinforcement. They argue that a lack of routine inspections by municipal officials allowed the situation to deteriorate unchecked.
The Noida Development Authority has mandated a comprehensive probe. CEO Krishna Kumar Karunesh has deployed senior officers to the scene and requested an exhaustive report. He warned that any evidence of negligence will trigger rigorous enforcement action. Security has been bolstered around the affected segment, and the public has been urged to keep a safe distance from the site while the investigation proceeds.
