Rescue Teams Recover Bodies in Uttarkashi After Kedarnath Avalanche
High-altitude rescue operations in Uttarkashi have intensified following a tragic avalanche along the Kedarnath pilgrimage route. Unprecedented snowfall triggered a glacial slide that stranded a group of eight adventurers near the 4,000-meter mark. On Wednesday, rescue personnel managed to retrieve the bodies of four individuals from the avalanche zone, marking a somber milestone in the ongoing effort.
The recovery process relied heavily on aerial support. Helicopters ferried the deceased from the trekking route to the Matli Heliport, where they were transported to Uttarkashi District Hospital for identification and medical examination. Family representatives have already identified two of the victims. The confirmed deceased are Vartika Verma, 28, and Deepika Verma, 29, who resided in Lucknow.
Forensic and police procedures are underway for the remaining two bodies. Family members of the unidentified victims are traveling to the region to assist authorities with the verification process. Standard post-mortem protocols have been initiated to determine precise causes and formalize records.
The recovery mission was spearheaded by a joint team from the SDRF and NIM. Starting early Wednesday, search parties systematically scoured the likely tracks of the missing group. The challenging mountainous environment and fresh snow cover delayed the discovery, but teams successfully located the remains at separate coordinates throughout the day.
Supply and evacuation logistics were managed by a dedicated helicopter fleet. The aircraft made several successful flights between Dehradun, Matli, and Kedarnath. Beyond retrieving the deceased, the flights delivered critical relief supplies, including fifty kilograms of food rations and multiple butane gas cylinders, ensuring that ground teams remained well-provisioned during the operation.
A multi-agency response framework is actively managing the crisis. Disaster management officials, revenue officers, medical personnel, and ITBP soldiers are operating from forward camps. District Magistrate Prashant Arya has been personally supervising the coordination efforts to streamline rescue and relief activities.
The search phase concluded on Wednesday evening as teams regrouped at base camp. Planning is currently underway to launch a renewed search operation on Thursday. Officials are hopeful that improved weather conditions will allow teams to locate the four remaining missing trekkers and their guide. Rescue authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to complete the mission successfully.
