Rescue Teams Dig Through Rubble after Bhivandi Building Collapse
In Bhivandi, Maharashtra, a four‑storey building collapsed late on Thursday, leaving two people dead and prompting a large‑scale rescue operation. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reported that more victims may still be trapped beneath the crushing debris.
According to reports, the building began to tilt around 11:30 p.m. on July 30, prompting construction workers to evacuate the premises. Ongoing repair activities meant that most laborers were already outside when the structure gave way.
During the rescue, NDRF teams retrieved two bodies and rescued a woman who survived the collapse. She was transported to a nearby hospital and is currently listed as stable.
Survivor Deepak Kumar Yadav told investigators that a neighboring column was being repaired, and the sudden crash woke him after dinner. He fled outside, describing the scene as chaotic, and managed to jump from the first floor.
Local resident Neha Singh, who was looking for her husband, said he entered the building to check something and the collapse happened within ten minutes of his arrival. He remains missing, and his mobile phone continues to ring unanswered.
Other eyewitnesses, including Sangeeta Prajapati and Abhay Kumar Yadav, sustained injuries while attempting to escape. Yadav mentioned a fractured leg after leaping from the lower level. He estimated that about 25‑30 people were inside at the time, with the building containing roughly 45 rooms.
Authorities suspect three to four laborers could still be trapped. The extensive rubble is slowing down the rescue work, but NDRF and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are employing JCBs and other machinery to clear the site throughout the night despite poor visibility and safety challenges.
