Renewable Energy Milestone: 104 Indian Airports Achieve Net‑Zero Power
The latest data released by the Ministry of Civil Aviation confirms that 104 airports nationwide have attained 100 % renewable electricity consumption. This breakthrough aligns with the country’s broader climate agenda and demonstrates the scalability of solar and hydro solutions in high‑demand settings.
The deployment strategy blends rooftop solar farms, ground‑mounted arrays, and long‑term hydro‑electric procurement. Together, these measures eliminate reliance on fossil‑fuel based grids for airport operations, delivering clean power for lighting, air‑conditioning, baggage handling, and other critical systems.
Experts note that the cumulative carbon savings are significant, estimating a reduction of around 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year. The achievement follows earlier milestones, such as Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport’s hybrid solar‑hydro model and Kochi International Airport’s pioneering full‑solar status.
Looking ahead, the government plans to expand renewable coverage to all remaining airports by 2030, further cementing India’s commitment to a net‑zero aviation sector and contributing to the national 2070 climate objective.
