Remembering Swami Agnivesh: The Arya Samaj Reformer Who Resigned Over Police Violence

Agnivesh’s spiritual journey began when he embraced sanyas in 1970 and aligned himself with the Arya Samaj, an organization that promotes Vedic values, opposes idol worship and seeks social equality. He set up the Arya Samaj headquarters in Rohtak, Haryana, and launched the Arya Samaj Youth Organisation to engage young people in reformist activities. His tenure as education minister was marked by attempts to modernise curricula and increase access to schooling for marginalized communities. However, the 1982 lathi‑charge on striking labourers forced him to confront a moral dilemma. Declaring that state violence contradicted his principles of social justice, he stepped down, a rare act of protest in Indian politics. After leaving office, he intensified his work with the Bhandua Mukti Morcha, championing the cause of bonded labourers and Dalits, and later acted as a mediator between Maoist insurgents and the government, seeking peaceful resolutions.
