Relief and Rehabilitation Demands Rise as Assam Floods Submerge Villages

Assam’s flood season reached a critical point as Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi toured the hardest‑hit areas on July 22, urging state officials to intensify relief operations and fast‑track rehabilitation programmes. He emphasized that government aid must reach each family in a timely manner, especially those who have lost homes, crops and livestock.

Gogoi’s field visit included interactions with displaced residents living in temporary shelters, assessment of ground conditions, and direct distribution of food packets, dry clothes and emergency kits. He reported that the surge in water levels has forced thousands to evacuate, while several villages remain underwater and vital infrastructure such as bridges and roads has been severely damaged.

"The flood situation in Jorhat and across Assam is extremely serious," the MP said. "Numerous families have been stripped of their shelter and livelihood, and many are grieving the loss of loved ones."

In meetings with community volunteers, relief workers and district officers, Gogoi gathered a comprehensive list of immediate needs: medical assistance, safe drinking water, secure shelters and prompt delivery of relief material. He urged the state to remove procedural delays that hamper aid distribution.

The MP further appealed for adequate compensation for the families of the deceased and for an accelerated restoration of electricity, potable water, and road connectivity. He pledged that the Congress will raise these concerns in all appropriate forums and continue to advocate for the flood‑affected populace.

According to the latest state figures, more than 727,000 people across 25 districts have been affected since April 29, with 31 confirmed deaths. A total of 95 relief camps are currently providing shelter to 18,574 displaced individuals. Rescue and relief are being coordinated by the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Indian Army, Assam Police and district administrations.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy thunderstorms and substantial rainfall over the next four days, increasing the risk of further flooding in vulnerable regions.
