Refugee Leaders Reject ‘Black Day’ Claims, Emphasise Constitutional Gains

Political commentators in the region have tried to label August 5 as a "black day" for the nation, citing concerns over the revocation of Article 370. Refugee leaders from the Western Pakistani community in Samba countered these claims, arguing that the narrative does not reflect their lived experience.

Ramesh Singh, a senior member of the refugee committee, said that before the 2019 amendment, the community faced denial of basic rights, limited job opportunities, and a lack of official documentation. "After the constitutional change, we witnessed an influx of employment prospects and a renewed sense of belonging," he noted.

Both Gandhi and Singh warned that politicising the day undermines the genuine aspirations of refugees who have finally gained recognition. They called on political parties to focus on development rather than revisiting a settled legal framework.
