Political fallout over Ram Temple idol consecration sparks controversy

The consecration of the idol at the partially built Ram Temple in Ayodhya has ignited fresh political controversy. Critics, including former chief minister Digvijay Singh, argue that the timing of the "prana pratishtha" ceremony was deliberately chosen to serve electoral objectives.

Rakesh Sinha, speaking for the Congress, highlighted that several prominent Vedic scholars and Shankaracharyas had raised doubts about the ritual’s authenticity and its proximity to upcoming polls. He claimed that the event was turned into a massive political spectacle, compromising the sanctity of the deity for vote‑bank considerations.

The debate has also touched on allegations of fund misappropriation at other religious sites, most notably the Mahakaleshwar Temple, where Singh alleges that donations are being embezzled. Sinha demanded a comprehensive, court‑ordered inquiry into both the Mahakaleshwar and Ram Temple fund flows, warning that unchecked corruption could destabilise the broader religious‑political landscape.

Opposition leaders have further linked the controversy to regional issues, citing the Assam chief minister’s remarks on the supposed end of polarisation politics and the Trinamool Congress’s internal disputes in Kolkata. Sinha suggested that these events illustrate a pattern of government‑backed partisan actions that undermine democratic norms.

The call for an independent probe continues to gain momentum, as civil society groups urge transparency in the handling of religious donations and the separation of faith from partisan maneuvering.
