Rainfall Surge in Rajasthan as Southwest Monsoon Advances, Flood Risks Rising

The southwest monsoon’s arrival in Rajasthan has sparked a noticeable surge in rainfall, especially across the eastern belt where moderate to heavy showers were recorded in the last day.

State meteorologist Radheshyam Sharma explained that the monsoon’s northern limit now passes through Udaipur, Ajmer and Jhunjhunu, and that it is expected to move further eastward over the next 48‑72 hours, widening the rain‑affected zone.

A well‑defined low‑pressure region over the Bay of Bengal and the Odisha coast is feeding moisture into the north‑west Indian subcontinent, while a seasonal trough traversing southwest Rajasthan is reinforcing the influx of humid air. These synoptic features are responsible for the sustained rain and increased cloud cover.

Current forecasts predict thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rain in several districts of Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer, Bharatpur, Bikaner and parts of Jaipur. Isolated intense downpours could hit select districts of Kota and Udaipur.

For the upcoming week, the monsoon will remain active across most of the state, with particular emphasis on eastern and south‑eastern districts where heavy to very heavy rain could lead to river overflow, flash floods and water‑logging in vulnerable low‑lying zones. Authorities are advised to monitor river levels and be prepared for emergency response measures.
