Rain Bands Likely to Hit Tamil Nadu’s Western, Central and Delta Zones by Friday
A developing low‑pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is poised to sweep rain bands across Tamil Nadu, with the most intense impact expected by Friday. The Chennai regional weather centre warns that western, central and delta zones will experience the heaviest precipitation.
On Thursday, the forecast highlights severe rain in Coimbatore and Tirunelveli's upland regions, along with Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Theni and Kanyakumari districts. Wind speeds in these areas may reach 50 km/h, intensifying the weather threat.
The rain belt will widen on Friday, encompassing Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Salem and Dharmapuri. Further inland districts such as Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Madurai, Dindigul, Kutralam, Kallakurichi, Namakkal and Karur are also projected to receive substantial rainfall.
The delta region of the Cauvery River, together with neighboring districts like Tiruvannamalai, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam, is expected to see heavy showers. Pudukkottai and Shivganga have also been listed as rain‑prone zones.
While the southern coast prepares for widespread downpours, the northern interior areas may see a short‑term temperature rise of up to three degrees Celsius during the day. Chennai's maximum temperature on Tuesday is estimated at around 36 °C, reflecting lingering heat in the interior.
Overall, Friday's rain coverage will be broader compared with Thursday, and only light to moderate rain is anticipated for Tuesday over districts such as Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari before the main system intensifies.
