Railway Minister Outlines Tatanagar Projects and Khatipura Express

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has presented a detailed picture of the rail projects shaping Tatanagar and its surrounding areas in Jharkhand. Speaking on Monday, he said these works are designed to expand traffic capacity and offer passengers better facilities.

Tatanagar Railway Station is being redeveloped on a large scale. The station's capacity will be raised, and the project will improve connections between the two sides of the city. It is also expected to pave the way for new train operations in the future.

Tatanagar is being developed as a leading rail centre in eastern India through several major works. On the Adityapur-Tatanagar-Salgajhari section, construction of a third line is underway. Work is also moving ahead on plans for third and fourth lines on the Seraikela-Kandra and Chandil-Gamharia sections.

For the Chandil-Kandra section, construction of third and fourth lines has received approval. The third line on the Rajkharsawan-Dangoaposi section has already been brought into service. Together, these projects will help speed up freight and passenger train movement and reduce congestion on the network.

The station redevelopment scheme proposes increasing the platforms from the current five to nine. New station buildings will come up at the northern and southern ends, along with an air concourse, circulating area and modern parking. To expand yard capacity, the plan includes four extra loop lines in the up grid and three new platforms.

The Railways also intends to make Tatanagar a major centre for Vande Bharat trains. This would involve a modern coaching depot and the infrastructure required for their maintenance. The approval process in this regard is ongoing.

Several railway overbridges and underbridges are being constructed to improve safety and ease of movement. Meanwhile, a new railway station is being developed at Sundarnagar, near Tatanagar.

To further strengthen rail links, the inaugural special service of the Santragachi-Khatipura Express was launched on 26 October 2026. The service connects Tatanagar with North India and Rajasthan. Its route covers Tatanagar, Ranchi, Daltonganj, Sasaram, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Mirzapur, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Agra and Khatipura.

According to the Ministry of Railways, better rail connectivity and new infrastructure will accelerate industrial, commercial, educational, employment, tourism and pilgrimage activities in Tatanagar and nearby regions. The projects will also bring modern amenities to passengers and support the broader social and economic development of the area.
