Raichur district was plunged into mourning after Devendrappa Swami, a respected 58-year-old spiritual guru and former school principal, was found hanged in his Jagadguru Shivananda Math on Friday. The math, located in Bassapur (EJ) village under Sindhanur taluk, became the somber scene of this unforeseen tragedy.
Born in Gulguli village of Gajendragad in Gadag district, Swami Devendrappa had a dual life: by day, he was the headmaster at Mullur’s government higher primary school; by evening, he led spiritual sessions at the math he founded. Over time, a growing detachment from material life drew him deeper into renunciation.
Police investigations point to depression as a likely cause, though no suicide note or clear motive has surfaced yet. Having distanced himself from family for years, the swami’s solitary existence may have exacerbated his inner turmoil. Villagers expressed shock, remembering him as a dedicated educator and pious soul.
The case has been filed at Turuvihal police station, with preliminary probes underway. This comes against the backdrop of a 2022 suicide by Basava Siddalinga Swami of Madivaleshwar Math in Belagavi, who was distraught over false sexual harassment accusations amplified by social media audio leaks. He had sought action against vested interests maligning Lingayat seers before taking the extreme step.
The recurring nature of such incidents among math heads highlights vulnerabilities in spiritual leadership, urging communities to foster open dialogues on mental well-being and counter misinformation swiftly.
