Radio’s Role in India’s Freedom Struggle and Rural Development

During the fight for independence, radio became a powerful weapon for leaders. Subhas Chandra Bose used the Azad Hind Radio to broadcast messages to troops abroad, while the Congress Radio transmitted updates on civil disobedience campaigns, galvanising public sentiment. After 1947, the broadcaster turned its focus toward nation‑building. Akashvani launched agricultural advisories, health tips, and school lessons that reached millions in remote areas where television and internet were unavailable. In disaster situations, radio proved indispensable, delivering timely warnings when other communication channels failed. The medium’s ability to provide real‑time, low‑cost information cemented its place as a trusted source for rural communities.
