Push for Branding and Export Growth in Indian Tea

During his speech at the UPASI Tea Research Foundation’s 100‑year celebration, the Vice President underscored the urgency of building recognizable Indian tea brands. He noted that many international markets are already saturated with established tea labels from other countries, making brand differentiation essential for Indian exporters.

He urged tea producers, exporters and marketing agencies to collaborate on creating a unified branding framework that showcases India’s diverse tea heritage – from Assam’s robust black teas to Darjeeling’s delicate muscatels. Strategic promotion, geographic indication tagging and quality certification were identified as tools to elevate brand perception.

The Vice President also recommended that export‑focused companies shift from bulk transactions to value‑added contracts that command higher price points. He called for government support in facilitating market access, simplifying certification procedures and providing incentives for small‑holder participation in premium export programmes.

Through coordinated branding and export‑oriented initiatives, the sector can unlock new revenue streams, improve farmer earnings and reinforce India’s reputation as a source of high‑quality teas.
