Punjab Law‑And‑Order Deteriorates, Says Congress’ Sachin Pilot Amid Election Race

During a press interaction in Chandigarh, Congress leader Sachin Pilot said Punjab is witnessing a severe breakdown of law and order as the state heads toward a crucial assembly election.

Pilot, on a five‑day tour of the state, blamed the BJP‑led Union government for its inability to curb drug smuggling that enters India from Pakistan via drones. He questioned the role of the Defence and Home ministries, demanding a clear account of measures taken against cross‑border narcotics.

He asserted that the BJP, now on its twelfth year at the centre, is attempting to deepen its political roots in Punjab, while also reminding that the party bore responsibility for the drug issue during its earlier coalition with the Shiromani Akali Dal.

According to Pilot, the situation on the ground is dire: gangsters are openly firing at civilians, several murders have been reported, and police stations have faced bomb attacks. He cited the killing of anti‑drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhotta in Mansa, an incident that was streamed live and showed the brazen nature of the violence.

Pilot concluded that the present climate of criminality surpasses even the period when terrorism was at its peak in Punjab. He pledged that the Congress will work tirelessly to restore safety, ensure justice for victims, and hold the culprits accountable.
