Alkazi’s early education took place in Pune before he moved to St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, where he joined Sultan Bobby Padamsee’s English theatre troupe. In 1947, at his father's urging, he travelled to London and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, mastering stage lighting, set design and acting techniques. Offers from the English Drama League and the BBC followed, but Alkazi returned to India, reviving a Bombay theatre group in 1952 and later reshaping the nation’s most important drama institution.
