Public‑Private Partnership Drives Delhi’s First Large‑Scale Dog Rescue Centre
A pioneering dog rescue centre is set to rise in Delhi’s Dwarka sector, thanks to a public‑private partnership that merges civic authority with corporate social responsibility. Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sanju placed the foundation stone on July 28, marking the start of a 6,050‑square‑metre complex designed to shelter, vaccinate and neuter stray dogs.
The project enjoys backing from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation and local officials including Mayor Vijay Kumar, MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and MLA Kailash Gahlot. By leveraging CSR funding, the initiative incurs no cost to the MCD, showcasing a collaborative model that other Indian cities could emulate.
Delhi grapples with an estimated 800,000‑1,000,000 stray dogs, a burden reflected in the 25,000+ annual dog‑bite cases reported in hospitals. The shelter will serve as a critical hub for humane animal management, reducing stray populations and improving public health.
During his visit, LG Sanju toured the city’s only animal crematorium and urged the inclusion of NGOs, veterinary specialists and dog‑lover groups in future planning. He later examined the Aero City development at the airport, where GMR officials presented sustainable infrastructure plans encompassing water conservation, traffic management and metro connectivity, reinforcing the city’s long‑term, balanced growth strategy.
