Prestige Fight in UP MLC Polls as Parties Stake Claims
The polling for 11 Legislative Council seats in Uttar Pradesh is underway, drawing intense attention as the BJP and the Samajwadi Party treat the election as a question of prestige. Observers view the contest as an important political indicator ahead of the coming assembly elections.
Ram Gopal Yadav, SP national general secretary and Member of Parliament, voted in Etawah. In Lucknow, BJP state vice president Neeraj Singh, after casting his vote, claimed that the party would win all 11 seats.
Expressing his party’s optimism, Neeraj Singh said, “We are completely sure that we will win all 11 seats in the Legislative Council elections for teacher and graduate constituencies. We have worked for the interests of education and teachers, and I believe this is earning us the trust of the people.”
He also targeted Akhilesh Yadav, saying, “Akhilesh Yadav has been away from power for many years. Under his leadership, the Samajwadi Party has won just one election, and since then it has faced defeat in every poll. Claiming that all elections are being won through illegitimate methods amounts to raising doubts about and insulting the democratic system.”
A total of 11 seats are being filled through this exercise, comprising five graduate constituencies and six teacher constituencies. Arrangements include 2,697 polling stations, and 14,81,310 voters are eligible to vote.
Voting commenced at 8 am and will go on until 4 pm. Counting is scheduled for October 27.
Voters have been arriving at various polling stations in Lucknow, including the Government Inter College (GIC). Police forces have been posted at the centres for security, and voters are admitted only after their identities are checked.
