Political Debate Intensifies as Assam Seeks Periodic Voter List Clean-Up

In a statement to the press on October 14, Assam minister Jayant Mallah Barua demanded that the state's voter register undergo a Systematic Annual Review every five years. He argued that such a cycle is vital to ensure that the electoral roll contains only Indian citizens. Referring to the anti‑foreign agitation between 1979 and 1985, which ended with the Assam Accord, Barua said the movement created a compelling reason for routine verification. The minister also criticised opposition leaders for blaming electronic voting machines and raising doubts about paper ballot systems after electoral losses. He pointed to a recent Nalbari gathering, claiming that the BJP‑led government is earning increasing support from women and the youth, though independent confirmation of the alleged 30,000 participants is lacking. Barula admonished groups opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act, labeling their stance contrary to national priorities. The proposed five‑year SAR is expected to add a new dimension to the ongoing disputes over citizenship, voter eligibility, and illegal immigration, with the ultimate authority to enforce it residing with the appropriate election officials.
