Political Calculus in Aligarh: From Clean Sweep to 2027 Battles

The lead-up to the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election has already sparked intense activity in Aligarh district. Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s total mastery of the district’s seven assembly seats in 2022, rival factions are recalibrating their strategies to challenge BJP’s stronghold. Early campaigning is now in full swing, with candidates focusing on localized voter engagement across the region.

Electorally, Aligarh encompasses seven crucial constituencies: Aligarh, Atrauli, Barauli, Chhata, Koil, Eglas, and Khair. The incumbent representatives include Mukta Sanjeev Raja, Sandeep Kumar Singh, Jaivir Singh, Ravindra Pal Singh, Anil Parashar, Rajkumari Sahyogi, and Surender Dilwar. Each incumbent brings a unique mandate shaped by the 2022 results, which featured decisive BJP victories across the board.

Detailed election data paints a picture of mixed competitiveness. In Aligarh, Mukta Sanjeev Raja defeated Samajwadi Party’s Jafar Alam by 12,786 votes, securing 120,389 votes against 107,603. The Bahujan Samaj Party and Congress trailed behind. Atrauli witnessed Sandeep Kumar Singh’s robust performance, as he defeated Veeresh Yadav by a 39,324-vote margin, amassing 125,691 votes. The contest saw eleven participants.

Chhata delivered a 24,327-vote victory for Ravindra Pal Singh over SP’s Lakshmi Dangar. Singh polled 111,293 votes while his rival secured 86,966, with ten candidates in the race. Koil proved to be the tightest battleground, where Anil Parashar edged out Shaz Ishtiaq by merely 5,028 votes. Parashar’s vote count stood at 108,067, narrowly surpassing Ishtiaq’s 103,039 in a nine-candidate race.

Barauli showcased a massive BJP wave, as Jaivir Singh defeated BSP’s Narendra Sharma by an impressive 90,645 votes. Singh’s tally reached 147,984 compared to Sharma’s 57,339. Eglas featured a five-way contest where Rajkumari Sahyogi triumphed over Rashtriya Lok Dal’s Birpal Singh by 59,163 votes, polling 127,209 against Singh’s 68,046.

The Khair constituency has seen dynamic leadership changes. Anup Pradhan won decisively in 2022, beating BSP’s Charu Khan by 74,341 votes with 139,643 ballots. However, Pradhan’s resignation in 2024 triggered a by-election that proved critical. Surender Dilwar capitalized on the vacancy, winning for the BJP with 100,181 votes. Charu Khan, contesting under the Samajwadi Party banner, drew 61,788 votes. These electoral shifts underscore the volatile nature of the district’s political calculus as 2027 approaches.
