Police Use Minimal Force Amid Clashes Over Illegal Structures Removal

The second consecutive day of the eviction campaign on Ranchi's HC Bypass saw a sharp escalation when police intervened with measured force to disperse a crowd of protesters. The clash unfolded near DPS Chowk, where locals surged onto the road, obstructing traffic and confronting law‑enforcement officers.

District administration and municipal teams arrived with a substantial police presence, JCB excavators and support vehicles to continue dismantling structures that have been identified as illegal on government and railway property. As demolition work commenced, a sizable group of women emerged from the surrounding lanes, demanding an immediate halt. They argued that the demolition threatens the shelter of families who have lived there for years and that they were denied a reasonable window to evacuate their belongings.

The protesters also highlighted that the operation began right after the Hortalika Teej fasting period, which they felt was insensitive to community customs. Their action forced a complete stoppage of traffic along the main stretch between Birsa Chowk and Satellite Chowk, leading to long vehicle queues and significant morning congestion. Some commuters reported missing flights as a result of the blockage.

Authorities emphasized that removing illegal encroachments from public land is a legal obligation and will continue despite opposition. Additional police units have been posted to the area to monitor the situation and avoid further road shutdowns. The administration has assured that a separate grievance redressal mechanism will be set up for affected residents.
