Police urged to remove mics only if illegal, says Kolkata Imam

Imam Athur Kasmi clarified that police can only intervene if the microphone or loudspeaker violates legal limits. He recounted that a recent meeting with police officers conveyed a warning that non‑compliance could lead to forcible removal.

"If the device exceeds the authorized decibel level, the police have the right to act. Otherwise, the equipment may remain," Kasmi said.

He reported that a mosque in the vicinity has already taken down its microphone following the police directive, while other mosques are awaiting further clarification.

Kasmi reiterated his belief that any action taken must be rooted in law, and that all imams share this commitment to legal compliance.
