Police Seize Gold, Bike and Chemicals After Catching Fraudsters in Sangli

The Crime Detection Branch of Miraj City Police announced a successful operation that led to the recovery of gold jewellery, a motorcycle and the chemical agents used in a gold‑theft scam. The incident unfolded on 17 September when two men arrived at the home of 64‑year‑old Mahadevi Shivram Modge, claiming they could brighten her brass utensils and also polish gold bangles.

After gaining her trust by demonstrating the cleaning of brass items, the duo convinced Modge to hand over two gold bangles totaling 60 grams. They mixed a yellow chemical into the polishing solution, heated the mixture, and later removed the liquid, telling the victim to retrieve the bangles without touching the solution.

A subsequent weighing at a jeweller revealed that the bangles had lost 18.386 grams of gold, translating to a loss of roughly ₹3.5  lakh. Following a review of more than thirty CCTV feeds, police identified the suspects and tracked them to the Station Chowk area, where they were detained.

The arrested individuals – Durgesh Kumar, 27, and Devendra Kumar, 36, both hailing from Sonadia village in Khagaria district, Bihar – admitted to the crime during interrogation. All seized items, including ₹3.5  lakh worth of gold, a two‑wheeler, and the chemical substance, have been handed over to the evidentiary department.

Law enforcement urges citizens to stay vigilant and avoid allowing unknown persons to undertake any polishing or cleaning of jewellery at their homes. Any suspicious approach should be reported to the police station or via the emergency helpline 112.
