Motihari, October 27: Police in East Champaran district of Bihar have busted a counterfeit currency operation and seized fake Indian notes worth Rs 4.95 lakh. One man was arrested during the action, but a companion slipped away from the police team.

The case is now under active investigation. Police have intensified efforts to nab the absconding suspect and to uncover the wider links of the racket.

According to Sadar-1 Sub-Divisional Police Officer Dilip Kumar, who briefed the media on Tuesday, a secret alert was received during night patrol in the Turkaulia police station area on Monday. The alert said some people were involved in the handling of fake notes. Because of the sensitivity of the information, he formed a special team under his command to verify it and take immediate steps.

The team began vehicle inspections near Semra station and tried to stop two suspects riding a motorcycle. When they saw the police, one rider managed to escape, while the second was held on the spot.

The arrested individual has been identified as Sheikh Ayanul, a resident of Janarwa village in the Banjaria police station area of East Champaran. Police recovered 10 bundles of fake notes during his search, with a combined value of Rs 4 lakh 95 thousand.

The SDPO confirmed that the seized notes have been impounded and further action is being taken in the matter. Officers are trying to establish the origin of the counterfeit currency and the individuals it was planned to reach. The search for the absconding man is also continuing.

The operation was conducted under the leadership of Dilip Kumar, with support from Turkaulia Station House Officer Ranjeet Kumar, Sub-Inspectors Renu Kumari and Amarjeet Kumar, and the Motihari District Intelligence Unit. Police are examining every angle of the case, and more information is likely to emerge after the investigation into the source of the notes and others linked to the alleged trade is complete.
