Police Seize Body, Launch Postmortem After Alleged Dowry Killing in Jharkhand

Law enforcement officials in Medininagar have taken control of the corpse of Vaishnavi Devi, a newly married woman whose death on Tuesday night is being investigated as a possible dowry‑related homicide.

The 24‑year‑old was discovered hanging from a rope inside a bedroom of her husband’s family home in the Redma Chowk locality. Her relatives from Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, immediately raised concerns that the death was staged to conceal a murder motivated by dowry disputes.

Medical staff at Medini Rai Medical College and Hospital confirmed her death upon arrival. While the in‑laws attempted to transport the body without official clearance, police stationed at the hospital’s security post intervened and secured the scene.

The victim’s family, led by her maternal uncle Jeetendra, traveled to Jharkhand on Wednesday and lodged a formal complaint, accusing the groom’s family of continuous harassment for additional dowry after the wedding.

Investigators have now forwarded the body to a forensic laboratory for a post‑mortem examination. Senior police officers stated that the investigation will focus on the family’s allegations, the circumstances surrounding the hanging, and any forensic evidence that may indicate foul play.

The case adds to a growing list of dowry‑related deaths in the region, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of anti‑dowry laws and heightened protection for newly married women.
