Police probe funding and approvals as another FIR names Banerjee chief organiser
West Bengal law‑enforcement agencies have intensified their investigation into the Sevashray health‑camp scheme after a second FIR was registered on Saturday night. The Bisnapur police station, acting on a complaint by local BJP figure Abhijit Das, has charged TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee and a host of co‑accused with offenses ranging from fraud to illegal medical practice. The FIR lists Banerjee as the "chief organiser" of the camps, accusing him of planning, managing and executing the events without securing any statutory clearances. The charges are framed under the Indian Penal Code, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, the Pre‑Conception and Pre‑Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, the National Medical Commission Act and the West Bengal Clinical Establishments Act. Named alongside Banerjee are Sumit Roy, a fugitive executive assistant, former TMC aspirant Jangir Khan, ex‑MLA Dilip Mandal and several unidentified doctors, health workers and government employees. Investigators are also scrutinising the source of the funds used for the camps, noting that earlier arrests of Khan and Mandal were linked to separate financial inquiries. The first FIR, lodged on July 2 at Diamond Harbour police station, alleged that the camps were held without any required approvals for medicines, diagnostic tools and venue, endangering public health and violating multiple legal provisions.
