Police Nab Suspect in Malda Axe Slaying Amid Rumors of Affair

Law enforcement officers in Malda district confirmed the arrest of a man suspected of murdering his sister‑in‑law with an axe. The incident, which occurred late Saturday night in the Harishchandrapur locality, left 27‑year‑old Amrita Oran dead.

According to statements from relatives, Amrita was preparing a meal when her brother‑in‑law, identified as Panchu Oran, barged in and launched a savage attack. At the time, her husband Nandlal Oran was not at home and the couple’s children were playing elsewhere.

Following the brutal assault, Amrita’s shrieks alerted family members and nearby residents, who gathered at the scene. She was taken to a hospital in a critical condition and later pronounced dead. Police officers, led by the sub‑divisional police officer and the local station’s inspector‑in‑charge, arrived on the scene, collected statements, and began a coordinated search.

Within hours, Panchu was located, detained, and formally charged. Early investigation hints at a possible motive linked to rumors of an extramarital relationship, though officials have not ruled out other family‑related factors.
