Police detain mosque imam after allegations of assault in Meerut market

Meerut's Kasarganj Dal Market has witnessed a rising clash over a mosque that began construction without official sanction. Local traders reported the unauthorized activity to the Railway Road police station, leading officers to temporarily stop the work.

Trader Ishwar Chand later claimed that the mosque's imam, along with a senior follower, assaulted him and issued threats. Acting on the complaint, police escorted the imam and his son to the station for questioning.

The imam's detention prompted immediate visits from Hindu organization members who submitted a petition demanding swift punitive measures. Hindu leader Sachin Sirohi was among those present at the police station.

In response, representatives of AIMIM and the Samajwadi Party also arrived, alleging that Sirohi and a media figure attempted to force entry into the mosque, an effort the cleric repelled. They filed a counter‑petition against the activists.

Authorities have recorded statements from both parties and deployed a heavy police presence to keep the peace. Meerut SP Vinayak Bhosale indicated that preventive action is being taken against anyone named in the complaints.
