Police Detain Ahmedabad Jewelry Owner for Fraudulent Return Scheme

In a swift operation, Ahmedabad police arrested the proprietor of a well‑known jewelry outlet, accusing him of orchestrating a deceptive investment scheme that involved collecting over ₹1.4 crore in cash and silver from unsuspecting villagers. The scheme promised investors high yields on gold and silver deposits, a claim that led many to hand over their savings. The Dholka Town Police Station lodged a case under the Indian Penal Code sections 316(5) and 61(2) and the Gujarat Depositors’ Protection Act, pointing to the use of the family’s jewelry shop as a trust‑building tool. After an initial period where small profits were paid back, the suspects allegedly demanded larger sums, eventually defaulting on a pending amount of ₹74,51,776 despite repeated assurances of repayment. Investigators indicate that the fraudulent activity may be linked to earlier cases involving other family members—Ghanashyam Sony, Yash Kumar Sony, and Deep Kumar Sony—who faced similar accusations. The police are now probing whether the two cases are interconnected and are seeking any additional victims to come forward. A.R. Dhawan, the investigating officer, confirmed that Amit Kumar Sony was taken into custody on September 2, appeared before a magistrate the same night, and will remain in police custody pending further legal steps.
