PMK’s Strategic Non‑Support Decision Ahead of Oct 6 By‑Elections

Chennai, 18 September – In a move that could reshape the dynamics of two crucial by‑elections, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) announced that it will not support any political party in the Madurankulam and Dharapuram assembly segments. The declaration was made by PMK president Dr. Amburmani Ramdas after extensive discussions with party officials at the state and district levels.

The Election Commission has set October 6 as the polling date, with vote counting scheduled for October 9. Nomination papers were filed between September 9 and September 16; a verification exercise took place on September 17, and withdrawals can be lodged until September 19.

Both seats became vacant following the resignation of AIADMK legislators Maragatham Kumaravel and Satyabama, who later switched allegiance to the Tamil Vaidhiya Kazhagam (TVK). The contests are being treated as a litmus test for the ruling TVK’s acceptance among the electorate after it assumed power earlier this year.

Opposition parties – DMK, AIADMK and BJP – are finalising their strategies for the two constituencies. The AIADMK, in particular, views the vacancies as an opportunity to regain influence after the loss of its own members.

By opting out of both contesting and endorsing, PMK adds a distinctive variable to the electoral calculus in Madurankulam and Dharapuram, potentially affecting the margin of victory for the major contenders.
