PM Modi's Subhashit on Wise Counsel and Enduring Honour

A Sanskrit subhashit shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media on Monday has drawn attention for its message on fame, respect and service to the nation.

The verse shared by the Prime Minister is "Suvyahritani dheeranam phalatah parichintya yah. Adhyavasyati karyeshu chiram yashasi tishthati." According to its Hindi meaning, a person who considers the results of the well-reasoned words of patient, wise and discerning individuals, and then strives firmly in his work in line with them, gains long-lasting honour and respect, and makes a contribution to the progress of the nation.

The shloka is drawn from the 31st verse of the 39th chapter of Vidur Niti, part of the Udyog Parva in the Mahabharata, a celebrated epic of Sanatan Dharma. It was spoken by Vidur to King Dhritarashtra just before the Mahabharata war, when the king was concerned about the rights of the Pandavas.

The verse conveys to a ruler or any person that right conduct must be guided by careful judgment. Vidur tells the king that listening to wise words is not sufficient in itself. Lasting success and respect are reserved for those who understand the counsel of the learned, examine both the good and harmful long-term results of that counsel, and then proceed on their duty-bound path with determination.

It further explains that major decisions should be preceded by consultation with those more experienced and knowledgeable. Work undertaken in haste may bring short-term gains, but honour built on planned and thoughtful action endures.
