Penguin India declines to publish Sonia Gandhi's 'Belonging', sparks political controversy

The planned release of Sonia Gandhi’s memoir "Belonging" hit an unexpected roadblock when publishing house Penguin India announced it would not move forward with the project. The decision quickly turned into a political flashpoint, with the Congress accusing the ruling government of interference.

BJP leaders, however, dismissed the allegations as a diversion. Spokesperson Pratul Shahdev said, “Penguin India and Random House India have both clarified that the book is not theirs to publish. The matter is strictly a disagreement between the author and the publisher.”

Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat reinforced the narrative, noting that “publishers often have their own editorial policies. When those clash with an author’s perspective, it is a routine business decision, not a state‑driven action.”

According to the BJP, the publisher raised concerns over specific chapters that the author reportedly opposed, leading to the withdrawal. The party urged Sonia Gandhi to disclose the exact passages that caused the impasse, suggesting that they might relate to personal family references.

R.P. Singh, speaking for the BJP, highlighted that both author and publisher share responsibility for the content. He warned that if any portion of the book invites legal challenges, the publisher will also bear consequences.

Bihar minister Ashok Kumar Chaudhary admitted that the factual details remain murky, stating, “We do not know who applied pressure or why Penguin chose not to publish.”

The episode underscores the delicate balance between literary freedom and publishing standards, while political parties continue to trade accusations over the saga.
