Peace Deal Boosts Infrastructure and Tribal Welfare in Karbi Region

A year after the Karbi Peace Accord, the Karbi Anglong region is experiencing tangible improvements in both infrastructure and tribal welfare. Chief Minister Himesh Biswas Sarma highlighted that the agreement unlocked a special development package that funds road construction, bridge building, and the expansion of health facilities across the hilly districts.

The state has also intensified tribal welfare initiatives, delivering clean drinking water, upgraded schools and vocational training centres tailored to the needs of the Karbi community. These programs aim to bridge the socio‑economic gap that persisted during years of insurgency.

According to Sarma, the peace accord has encouraged former insurgents to lay down arms and join mainstream society, thereby strengthening the human resource base needed for development projects. The enhanced administrative authority granted to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council ensures that local voices shape the implementation of these schemes.

The 2021 accord, signed in New Delhi, also stipulated the rehabilitation and settlement of armed cadres, a move that has been instrumental in fostering a climate of trust and cooperation between the government and the Karbi people.
