Partition Remembrance Day observed in Gujarat as leaders salute the fallen

Gandhinagar, 14 August – The state of Gujarat marked Partition Remembrance Day with a solemn ceremony attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Singhvi. The leaders laid wreaths at a designated memorial, recalling the countless lives lost and the massive displacement that accompanied the 1947 division of India and Pakistan.

In a statement posted on his official handle, Chief Minister Patel described the partition as a "black chapter of our history," noting the unbearable pain endured by families forced to leave their ancestral lands. He pledged to keep the memory of those sacrifices alive and to educate future generations about the cost of communal discord.

Deputy Chief Minister Singhvi, in his address, highlighted the enduring impact of the tragedy on present‑day society and urged citizens to nurture unity. The event aligns with the national schedule announced by the Prime Minister two years ago, positioning the remembrance a day before Independence Day to underline the link between liberation and the scars of division.

Gujarat is also taking part in the "Har Ghar Tiranga" campaign, slated for August 9‑17, with a state‑wide Tiranga Yatra covering roughly 1,200 kilometres and aiming to raise the national flag across 7 million households. The Prime Minister, later that evening, paid his respects to the victims of partition and lauded the bravery of freedom fighters, reinforcing the theme of national solidarity.

The coordinated observances aim to transform historical anguish into a catalyst for peace, tolerance and collective progress.
