Parliamentary Showdown: Congress to Protest After Rahul Gandhi’s Speech Stopped
New Delhi, 30 July – The ninth day of the monsoon session is shaping up to be contentious. The opposition alleges that the Modi government prevented Rahul Gandhi from speaking in the Lok Sabha, prompting Congress members to organise a demonstration at the Makar Dar entrance of the Parliament complex. The protest is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., following a floor‑leaders’ meeting at 10:00 a.m.
The incident that sparked the protest occurred on Wednesday when Gandhi, during his remarks on the anti‑paper‑leak bill, criticised the administration’s handling of student protests, labeling certain officials as “idiot” and “blind devotee.” The ruling coalition raised objections, and Gandhi subsequently named Home Minister Amit Shah in connection with alleged firing on students. The clash led the Speaker to suspend the session for the day.
The anti‑paper‑leak bill, formally known as the Lok Pariksha (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, with a debate anticipated around 14:00 hours.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Manish Tiwari has submitted a notice seeking adjournment of the House to discuss a newly drafted anti‑defection law. He urged that the question hour, zero‑hour and other routine items be set aside to allow a comprehensive debate on the proposal.
