Parliamentary demand for inquiry into police use of pellet guns on student protesters in Delhi

Congress representative K.C. Venugopal submitted a formal note to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on August 10, demanding a full parliamentary inquiry into the police response to student protests on July 20. The protests were organized against a suspected leak of the NEET examination paper.

According to Venugopal, law‑enforcement agencies resorted to “unnecessary” and “excessive” force, deploying tear gas, batons, and pellet guns against unarmed students and young activists. He described the incident as an alarming example of state‑driven intimidation.

The MP referenced Articles 75 and 77, asserting that these constitutional clauses empower the Speaker to ensure the Home Minister appears before the House to answer for actions taken by forces under his jurisdiction.

He urged that the parliamentary committee examine the chain of command, the decision‑making process behind the deployment of lethal crowd‑control equipment, and the compliance of the operation with human‑rights standards.
