Parliamentarian calls for swift investigation and infrastructure overhaul after student housing collapse

Manoj Kumar Jha, Member of Parliament and Delhi University faculty, appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urgent action following the Satya Niketan building collapse that claimed six lives. He demanded a rapid, unbiased inquiry into the structural shortcomings, waterlogging and alleged botched repair works that caused the tragedy.

Jha linked the incident to a wider pattern of dilapidated civic infrastructure across the capital, noting recurring incidents of crumbling roads, failing bridges and illegal constructions. He warned that such failures stem from corruption, lax inspections and weak public accountability. The MP stressed that no student should be compelled to reside in unsafe or illegally converted structures while seeking higher education.

He proposed that the central government, the university and its agencies identify suitable public land for hostel construction, set firm deadlines, and publish progress reports. Special reservations should be made for women, socially disadvantaged groups, differently‑abled learners and those traveling from distant, economically vulnerable regions.
