Pandal Exit Gate Collapse Sparks Panic, 15 Hospitalised in Kolkata
A structural failure at the exit gate of the Chora Bagan Sarvajanik Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata caused a sudden panic among worshippers on Saturday. The collapse created a bottleneck, leading to a stampede that injured several people.
Subsequent reports indicate that fifteen victims were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for treatment, with a number of them described as being in serious condition. Rescue teams comprising police, disaster‑management personnel and fire‑service units arrived promptly to assist with evacuation and medical assistance.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, along with senior party officials, inspected the medical wards where the injured were admitted. He ordered that the highest standard of care be provided without delay.
The pandal’s management halted all further admissions and switched off all lighting inside the premises. Organizer Bikash Das said investigations are underway to determine whether the crowd pressure caused the gate to give way, emphasizing that the immediate focus is on caring for the injured.
