The announcement of 2026 Padma Awards has spotlighted Bihar’s unsung heroes, with Gopalji Trivedi receiving the Padma Shri for his groundbreaking work in science and engineering. From the humble soil of Muzaffarpur to national acclaim, Trivedi’s story is one of perseverance and innovation in agriculture.
Raised in a middle-class farming household in Matlupur, Gopalji’s formative years were defined by agricultural hardships. These experiences fueled his determination to pursue science, completing early education in village schools and advancing to Pusa High School for matriculation and Langat Singh College for intermediate.
Financial constraints briefly derailed his studies, compelling him to farm and teach locally. Undeterred, he pursued higher education at an agricultural university, securing advanced degrees including a PhD. Appointed professor at Tirhut College of Agriculture, he rose to Vice-Chancellor at Pusa Agricultural University, where he spearheaded advancements in farming tech.
Trivedi’s innovations have revolutionized productivity for Bihar’s farmers. By adapting lab discoveries for practical use in fields, he enhanced yields and profitability. Post-retirement, he remains actively engaged, mentoring rural communities and sustaining his impact on fisheries and agriculture.
Colleagues recall his innate connection to villagers, a bond forged in youth that informs his work. The Padma Shri affirms his role as a beacon for aspiring scientists from rural backgrounds, proving that village paths can lead to the highest honors.
