Over 50 CSEAM Complaints Trigger FIR Calls Across Eight Indian States

In a statement to the press, NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo said that the surge of more than fifty complaints about child sexual exploitation and offensive material on Instagram prompted the commission to write to the DGPs of eight states. The letters specifically requested that the police file first information reports (FIRs) and begin investigations without delay.

The eight states – Punjab, Delhi, Telangana, Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal, Haryana and Bihar – were asked to act against individuals responsible for creating, sharing or uploading such content. Kanoongo noted that the offences fall into three distinct categories, each punishable under Indian law, and that platforms must cooperate fully with investigations.

The NHRC has also taken note of a similar case involving the BBC, where Delhi police were notified and later summoned to appear before the commission when a timely FIR and investigative report were not provided.
