Opposition Says Election Commission Serves BJP Interests, Not Voters
Delhi, 16 October – On Friday, opposition parties once again attacked the central government, asserting that the Election Commission has lost its autonomy. Hussain Dalwai of the Congress, speaking in Mumbai, warned that citizens no longer have confidence in the commission, describing it as a body that bends to every order from the ruling party and acts like a government employee.
In Delhi, AAP’s Gopal Rai called for the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the Modi administration of shielding him. Rai welcomed the Supreme Court’s issuance of a notice to the commission over the India Block petition and expressed hope for a prompt verdict.
Rai also rebuked Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s claim of being ready for dialogue, accusing the government of speaking one language while practicing repression. He appealed for designated peaceful protest zones, such as Jantar Mantar, and urged the government to engage in meaningful dialogue.
