Opposition Demands Immediate Debate on Farmer Distress, Leaves Session

The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly witnessed a walkout by opposition members on July 2 after Speaker Rajesh Narvekar refused to entertain a motion calling for a thorough debate on the growing farmer suicide crisis.

Congress leader Vijay Vaidetterwar introduced the motion, citing the recent suicides in Latur and urging the state to outline concrete relief steps. He criticised the government for neglecting the compounded problems of agricultural debt, financial instability, and rising farmer deaths.

The debate also touched upon security concerns for Congress MLA Sajid Pathan, who has allegedly faced fresh intimidation from the Bisnoi gang. Vaidetterwar pressed for an intensive investigation and immediate strengthening of his security detail.

The Speaker assured that security provisions would be reviewed based on threat assessments, but the opposition found the response inadequate. Frustrated by the lack of a platform to discuss the agrarian emergency, the opposition members exited the assembly in protest.
