Opposition Alleges Spike in Crime; Vijay Vows Detailed Replies

Chennai, September 7 – The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is slated to reconvene on Monday at 9:30 a.m. after a three‑day adjournment. Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar has ruled out a "Question Hour" for the opening day, paving the way for the government to table an amendment bill before tackling other matters.

Earlier in the session, legislators clashed over funding requests for the police and fire‑rescue and disaster‑response agencies, both reporting to Chief Minister Vijay. Opposition leader Udayanidhi Stalin and ADMK MLA Palaniswami launched an aggressive attack on the government's handling of law and order.

Stalin asserted that within the first 116 days of the new administration, the state has slipped into "reverse gear," pointing to roughly 550 criminal incidents – including about 200 murders, over 300 sexual‑harassment cases, eight deaths linked to police action and ten alleged honor killings. Palaniswami added that the ministry has failed to curb homicides, robberies and a noticeable rise in crimes against women and children.

Vijay pledged to address every opposition question in depth and challenged DMK lawmakers to stay in the chamber instead of staging a walk‑out. He is also expected to announce further steps on policing, civic safety and fire‑rescue services. After his response, the assembly will turn to grant applications from the Forest, Commercial Tax, Stamp and Registration, and Environment and Climate Change departments.

Now in its 18th day, the ongoing session has largely revolved around fiscal allocations and departmental performance. The upcoming debate is poised to influence the final trajectory of the legislative calendar.
